I like Fashionising.com for their interesting articles. Ever so often they'll write about non-trends that have been stewing in my mind. Take this latest one about skirt suits.
The last few times I've been thrifting or dumpster diving in my mom's closet, I unearthed several beautiful skirt suits. Be it in the details of the fastenings--never mere buttons, sometimes jewelled hook and eye clasps, always beautifully effected--or the quality which makes vintage a class of its own. Unfortunately, the cuts didn't quite suit me (pardon the pun) or they were simply not in my size. Also, many of Mother's sets were rather worn out, especially the bottoms, so I had to discard quite a number of them (but saving the buttons). Needless to say, I'm still hunting for the perfect-fit vintage skirt suit to call my own.
Skirt suits are a whole different ball game from pant suits. While the latter is a symbol of power and feminism, the former is quite the opposite. While not completely submissive, they presented a more palatable demure and modest image. It epitomised what women should be, especially in the 70s when they were starting to join the workforce. They were then modern and a wardrobe staple. Mother had many (from her favourite Isetan, which had their own eponymous Career Shop by Isetan workwear line), and they were paired with her soft, white long-sleeved blouses, usually chiffon or some sort of satin blend, often with high necklines or tie necks. Of course, when I raid her closet I break them up, because it's just too much retro for one look.. I can't pull it off, not being model-esque and all, so I resort to mixing it up. That said, if her skirt suits weren't quite so boxy or ill-fitting on me I would definitely wear them as they were meant to be worn. (Yes, I have a thing against alterations. Anyway, it wasn't economical to alter and they wouldn't have been suits because the bottoms were too worn.) Now I just have a whole bunch of blazers and some buttons ):
Skirt suits today require a certain demeanour--not that I claim to possess one--or maybe they just have a certain air about them. It's elegant and slightly glamorous. And this is where I take issue with my short hair. The first time I cut it, it was still ok because it was rather mature and classic. Now it's a little bit wacky/funky and it's not going to be able to set off the poise of skirt suits. Close crops (definitely not ruling that out for Wednesday) don't go at all. But it's ok. Hair will grow. And I did ask for it. Oh well. It's not like I'm going to find The Skirt Suit any day soon.
And, I've never cared much for Lady Antebellum, but, I had a sudden craving for this song...
I'm a little late for quarter after one
