Cheap Chick

I tested some makeup over the weekend and here are my conclusions:

Bourjois 10 Hour Sleep Effect foundation in 72 Rose Clair (sample sachet):

It turns out that I put very little on and there was no discernable difference. I initally disliked the fragrance the liquid foundation had, but it's growing on me. All Bourjois foundations and powders have the same scent. They smell a little soapy and pleasant and the fragrance lasts pretty long, I think.

The colour was a little too pale for my liking but it went on smoothly and did not feel cakey. For all the rave reviews I had read about it online, I do not think it lived up to the hype. I did not notice any radiance but perhaps it was because I did not apply enough. I will get back to you again on that!

The foundation, concealer, powder and blush were fairly easy to remove with cleansing lotion and cotton pads, and then I washed with my normal facewash after to ensure cleanliness.

For SGD 38.80, this one was not too bad.

[edit] I tried the remainder of the sachet (it was a lot; poured onto the back of my hand then applied) but it wasn't for me. A tiny amount is more than enough for the whole face. I dabbed on the usual 5 points (forehead, cheeks, chin and nose) and spread. Ok, my skin is extra bad right now, but it didn't really do much to cover. If you're pale with blemishes and not much acne, you can get this. It was too white for me. Perhaps I should have gotten a darker shade.

There was some radiance when you put a substantial amount, but there's a tendency to apply too much = BAD. I hate gooky makeup on anyone. It blended easily but took a while to absorb. It was still wet after 5 to 10 minutes (may be perspiration's fault) and came off easily when dabbed (decided it was excessive so I patted my face gently with a spread-out tissue).

Whatever little I had left stayed on my face throughout the day. It was very sheer, but I don't know what it does. I suppose it evens out your skin tone slightly but again, you have to have fair to good skin to begin with.

Thankfully, even with a considerable amount it was still easy to remove at the end of the day.

Try this if you want something sheer and light, but only if you possess fair, dry skin and a good complexion. [/edit]

Bourjois Brush Concealer in Beige Clair (new):

This one came in a pen form. The brush applicator with a twist mechanism was convenient. The liquid concealer was easy to blend and I did not find it think or cakey. Coverage was ok, I used it to conceal my humongous zit and it was not noticeable. I did not use it to brighten the eye area or conceal dark eye circles/bags although the saleswoman purported it to be great for such purposes.

It costs SGD 19.90.

Bourjois Compact Powder in 72 Sable Rose (new):

I cannot offer much on this since I did not apply enough. Application was with a dry sponge. It was sheer and gave a matte finish. This colour gives a slightly healthy tint, compared to a whiter version in about the same shade. I think it makes your complexion look better, but only ever so slightly.

Again, affordable price at SGD 24.50.

Bourjois Little Round Pot Blush in 48 Cendre de Rose Brune (old):

This was Mother's blush way before everyone started raving about it. The colour goes on well, but I think it looks better applied on healthy tones rather than (pale) powdered skin.

I do not know the price for this one but it should be cheap-ish.

Bourjois Liner-Effect Mascara in Noir Styliste (tester):

My mother liked this one (on me). It comes with a brush that makes application somewhat more difficult because the mascara was slightly clumpy. (I whipped out the Volume Clubbing brush and was appalled at the amount of gunk stuck to it.)

The mascara itself was not bad. It did not weigh my lashes down and looked quite natural. It held curl fairly well and also gave volume. Another thing was that the mascara took quite some time to dry and easily smudges on your lower lid should you blink (if you're a noob newb like me). Also, my lashes felt a little stiff when it dried? However, it could be due to excess mascara. It is easy to apply too much mascara thanks to the brush. This will cause your eyelashes to be less curled then they were previously when naked. I think I just need to get the technique right. BHG Lot 1 did not have a Bourjois salesperson /:

As for removal, since it is waterproof you have to use an oil-based remover. I find that quite annoying. But this one comes off easily enough without having to rub (so it won't cause wrinkles!).

For about SGD 25 (?), this one is quite a bargain if you're a fan of brush applicators. I will buy this one sometime to try.

Fasio Hyper-Stay Mascara Deep Trick Curl Long (tester):

Whew, what a name! Trust the Japanese to come up with newfangled Janglish names. Hehe.

I liked the comb here better than the Bourjois brush, because it limited the amount of mascara applied each time. The instructions by the salesgirl was to brush from above, then below, then zig zag through from the base to the tips twice. I found this to be excessive (!!! extremely) and one swipe sufficed for me.

This one held curl well and did not feel heavy. My curl did not deteriorate at all upon application. It did not clump at all thanks to the comb and looked natural. It dried pretty quickly so there is little to no chance of smudging, especially if you apply a very light coat.

Removal for this waterproof mascara was tough. The mascara is very stubborn and I found that I had dark circles after my usual removal (oil-based eye and lip makeup remover and cotton pads), so take note. You have to be careful and if possible, place another cotton pad or tissue on the lower lid before wiping.

This one was a good find at SGD 21.90.

Bourjois So Delicate Lip Cream in 51 Rose Poudre (new):

I was looking for something matte (most of their lipsticks are glossy) and the saleswoman recommended this one. The colour is pretty and the scent is not too overwhelming, a little like rose and baby powder. It is non-sticky and what you see is what you get. The colour stays alright but does not stain, and is easily wiped off. I know it sounds like a paradox but it's true! It has a brush applicator and goes on like a lipgloss... Very convenient!

Wear this matte, or with a gloss. Either way it's fabulous for just SGD 25.

Bourjois Eau de Gloss in 17 Rose Vitamine (new):

I loved this one and have been thinking about it ever since my photoshoot! It comes with a light strawberry candy scent and has a non-sticky, moisturising formulation. The gloss goes on slightly sheer but definitely not colourless, subtly enhancing your lip colour. That is true of all Bourjois lipglosses—I swear by them!

Wear this on its own, or layered over lipstick. Whichever way, it makes your lips look (and smell) lovely. And you hardly need to touch up even if you eat.

Definitely worth it for SGD 23.50.

Bourjois Effet 3D in 15 Rose Arctic (tester):

This lipgloss came in a cute, handy mobile phone charm! Very awesome. They also have a full-sized one. This colour was also pretty, different from the Eau de Gloss collection.

A little bit expensive at SGD 9 (Mother doesn't think so) but awesome!

Ettusais Flat Design Liquid Foundation in 20 (Pink) Beige (sample sachet):

I liked this foundation alot! It provided heavy coverage and my complexion was flawless with no need for concealer or powder. I got a little over zealous in application—1 sachet of 0.3ml is really a lot, I didn't even finish it—and feedback was that it was thick (from the boyf who detests makeup i.e. biased). The colour suited my skin fine, I did not find it white at all, which was very rare. I wore it all day and it stayed great and even despite me being a sweat machine. I'm thinking this one is waterproof because when I washed my hands after it was difficult to remove! The foundation had matte finish and did not cake. Plus, there was no fragrance (y) so I felt good overall.

In the morning I wore the velvety foundation with just the Bourjois blush, darkened my eyebrows and swiped a pale pink GAP mini gloss, I headed out and turned more heads than usual. Which made me wonder if I had something stuck to my face or if my makeup was horrible or melting in the Friday heat.

After spending half a day running around, I headed home with the boyf and we spent the day watching shows. I rubbed off a good amount onto his shirt (oops, but it came off easily enough. No fear!) and also blotted with tissue paper. I think I even cried during Grey's. Nuzzled pillows, napped some and then rushed out for dinner with my girlfriends. Blotted off most of it (including the brows) but still looked and covered ok and then reapplied Paul & Joe Blush (his Mum's, the one with lots of pearls in different shades) and headed out for dinner with girlfriends. I think I OD-ed on blush, couldn't tell with the bad light. When I finally got home, I was sooo shagged but thankfully it wasn't difficult to remove with cotton pads and cleansing lotion.

Was very pleased with it overall, it lasted the whole day even though I perspired a great deal. I think in future I will just put a teeny amount, especially since my complexion will be better...... and blot with tissue throughout the day.

If I ever need a heavy coverage foundation to last all day (internships would be a good excuse, ahem) this would definitely be it! SGD 51 is a bit ouch for my wallet though. But surely, this is less bad for my skin.

*Prices quoted above are all usual prices.

That's me, 4th from the left with my beautiful brilliant BFFs ;)
Definitely OD-ed the blush there... and black as ever despite being sun-phobic.
I might have to resort to umbrellas or whitening. The horror!

When shopping, I was disappointed to find they do not bring in Bourjois lipbalms. I was really looking for the tinted lipbalm (here) or lipcreams. Bourjois can be found at BHG (formerly Seiyu), John Little/Robinsons and OG. I love their cosmetics especially for the affordable prices and good quality. Most items were bought at sales about 1.5 weeks ago—great discounts for even better prices—many of them were sub 20. On hindsight, the normal drugstore mascaras didn't impress me at all. I appear to be immune to L'Oreal and Maybelline despite the miracles they seem to work for everyone else.

Oh and just fyi, I have stick straight but abundant lashes on both top and bottom lashlines. I wouldn't consider them long or thick (individually) but they're decent. I have to crimp with a regular eyelash curler before applying mascara. I have a very normal face! Fairly dark, cool-tone, blemished combination skin with occasional acne and white/blackheads, average lips, oval face.

Update: I updated the prices but forgot to check the Bourjois pot blush (also available in mini version) and mascara. Also, I've no time to go for the Bobbi Brown workshop so I won't be getting any products! And I refunded the Bourjois foundation because I tried applying it proper and it failed \: review above!
