Shrinking Violet

Managed to score a SGD 10 Principles black maxi belted pencil skirt at the Revolution pop-up sale yesterday. Many lovely clothes, but most of them not in my size. Pity. If you're anything from UK10 to US size 6/8, do go!!! Today's the last day, and it ends at 6pm. They close off the third floor quite punctually, but the second floor's more flexible. The third floor has shoes, bags, vintage, and "bargains" (3 for $10). The second floor is generally pricier, but also has better clothing. Proceeds of the sale go to charity (:

I found a lovely SGD 80 Warehouse cowl back grey-and-silver midi-length knit dress (on hindsight, a good deal because it's brand new with tags), a SGD 50 BCBG mixed patterns 3/4-sleeved frock and a lot of 100% silk dresses ranging from SGD 50 to 100. I'm guessing if I had gone earlier, there probably would have been a lot more things in my size. Thankfully, my stingy-senses were functioning yesterday \:

Strangely, though, the label of the UK brand (now carried by Debenhams) says size 10, but fits perfectly when I'm almost certainly a UK 6. (Between UK 6 and 8, it's 6 >90% of the time--and it's not a matter of better fit, but simply whether the items are wearable.) Later, when I hopped over to Warehouse, I couldn't even fit in a lot of the UK 6s. WHY???!

Clearly, this is a phenomenon of the "bigger sizing, smaller sizes" delusional marketing strategies labels are employing. If anything, I'm becoming fatter, not thinner, yet I still can't fit the same size -.- in other words, my thickening waist and hips are no match for the overall weight gain of the general population.

Troublesome. What with shrinking shoe sizes--since a year ago I have consistently worn/bought EU35, where two years ago, size 35s weren't even in the picture--and now, most definitely clothing sizes, too. Come to think of it, I started out wearing UK 8 a little more than UK 6 (maybe about 105-95) but perhaps I wasn't so discerning about fit, nor quite as confident of my body, preferring looser clothes. Haha. Hmmm, body confidence, or a lack thereof coupled with a preoccupation for comfort and a little sloppiness, is the likelier explanation d: I'd like to think I've always had a critical eye. Heh.

But I digress. I couldn't fit into a teal version of this lovely short sleeve ruffle dress, which was really pretty, or this long sleeve bib dress with a peter pan collar and tastefully low back with exposed zipper, which sounds like a paradox but it's really cute... and a little bit of a tease. Hehe. UK4s would have been perfect..... Now I sound anorexic!! |: ugh. Ended up splurging on a black version of the ethereal ruffle dress (yes, by now I have one million black dresses......) (and don't you just love that name) but at least now I shall have membership (; and I can try to make the most of my birthday discount. Teehee.

I noticed, while passing by a Geox window, that this season's shoes are really quite my style. Mostly because I'm in love with any wardrobe basics/staples really, i.e. anything vaguely boring and plain. See the Marian and Milena shoes. Zara and Mango are also carrying pumps of the same shape/profile--roundish toe boxes and thicker, slightly tapered, mid-height heel--in the same kinds of safe, muted colours--taupe, light plum, darkish blue, black--and mostly in suede--it is winter, after all. Did you realise that thick heels--my favourite kind--are back in fashion? (: heehee.

Ran some errands also and managed to help pick out a dress for her, all before a secretly satisfying dinner. Lovely evening well spent with one of my best girlfriends (: noone quite agrees with me like she does. Sighs contentedly.

Ok, back to reading (:
